Akshaya Tritiya
Muhurat, Importance & Rituals

Muhurat – 09:19 AM to 12:09 PM
(mauritius time)

The day when every moment is auspicious — and merit earned never diminishes

Understanding the Occasion

What is Akshaya Tritiya?

“That which is offered today with a pure heart is never lost — it multiplies across lifetimes.”

— Puranic teaching on Akshaya Tithi

  • Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third tithi of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Vaishakha — typically in April or May.
  • The word Akshaya means “that which never diminishes” — wealth, merit, and blessings earned on this day are believed to grow eternally.
  • It is one of the very few days classified as Swayam Siddha Muhurat — a self-auspicious day requiring no separate planetary consultation for worship or new beginnings.
  • It is among the three and a half most auspicious days of the Hindu year — known as Sade Teen Muhurat.
  • Both the sun and moon are simultaneously in exalted positions: the sun in Aries, moon in Taurus — making this cosmically rare and spiritually powerful.

Mythology & Significance

Why This Day is Eternally Sacred

  • Lord Brahma is said to have begun the creation of the universe on this day — making it literally a day of eternal new beginnings.
  • The Treta Yuga, second of the four great cosmic ages, commenced on Akshaya Tritiya.
  • Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on this tithi — it is also celebrated as Parashurama Jayanti.
  • The sacred Akshaya Patra — the inexhaustible vessel gifted to the Pandavas by Lord Surya — was received on this day, ensuring no one in their household ever went hungry.
  • The holy river Ganga descended to Earth from the heavens on this tithi — making it sacred for all Ganga-related rituals and daan.
  • Lord Kubera received his divine status and treasuries on this day — hence Lakshmi-Kubera puja is especially powerful.
  • It is believed that Ved Vyas began dictating the Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha on this very tithi.
  • Any charitable act, japa, or puja performed today is said to multiply without limit and carry forward across future lifetimes.

Auspicious Timing

The Muhurat for Akshaya Tritiya

  • Unlike most festivals, the entire day is considered a muhurat — you may begin worship at any time from sunrise to sunset.
  • The most powerful window is sunrise to mid-morning (approximately 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM) when the tithi energy is at its peak.
  • If the Tritiya tithi spans two calendar days, worship on the day when the tithi is present at sunrise is most meritorious.
  • Pradosh Kaal — the period around sunset — is also highly charged for Lakshmi puja specifically on this day.
  • Beginning any new venture, purchase, or spiritual practice during the morning hours is considered inherently blessed.
  • For home shrine puja, no pandit consultation is required — simply begin after your morning bath and before noon for the fullest benefit.

The Home Shrine

Why Worship at Your Home Shrine?

  • Home puja on Akshaya Tritiya creates a direct channel of grace between the devotee and the divine without intermediary.
  • The home shrine is the family’s sacred centre — worshipping here is said to bring undiminishing blessings of peace, prosperity, and health to the entire household throughout the year.
  • Individual worship done with sincerity is fully equivalent to temple worship on a Swayam Siddha Muhurat day like this.
  • Even a simple puja of fifteen minutes, performed with full heart, earns merit the scriptures describe as equivalent to years of regular worship.
  • It is an ideal day to establish a new deity in your home shrine, begin a new prayer practice, or joyfully restart a lapsed one.

  • Panchamrit: milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar for abhishek

  • Akshat — unbroken raw rice mixed with turmeric
  • Incense sticks — lotus or rose fragrance preferred
  • Ghee diya with cotton wick
  • Naivedya prasad — kheer, mishri, fruits, or makhana
  • Yellow cloth or small pouch for new coins or gold
  • A small bell
  • Betel leaves and betel nut (paan and supari)

The Ritual

Step-by-Step Puja Ritual

1. Purification and Sankalpa

  • Wake before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes in yellow, white, or pink.
  • Light the diya and incense at your shrine before doing anything else.
  • Ring the bell three times to purify the space and invite divine presence.
  • Sit on your asana, close your eyes, and take your sankalpa — a silent vow stating your name, intention, and what you seek.
  • Fold your hands and offer a prayer to Lord Ganesha first: “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” — chant 11 times.

2. The Five Sacred Offerings (Panchopchar)

  • Snan (Water): Sprinkle Gangajal over the deity and around your shrine. For an idol, perform Panchamrit Abhishek — pour milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar, then rinse with plain water.
  • Gandha (Fragrance): Apply kumkum and haldi to the deity’s forehead and feet. For Goddess Lakshmi, also apply kumkum to her right hand.
  • Pushpa (Flowers): Offer Akshat first — turmeric-mixed rice placed at the base. Then place fresh flowers at the deity’s feet one at a time, each as a conscious offering.
  • Dhoop (Incense): Light agarbatti and circle it clockwise three times before the deity with full intention.
  • Dipa (Light): Perform ghee lamp aarti — wave the flame in gentle clockwise circles while ringing the bell. This is the most luminous moment of the entire puja.

3. Naivedya and Betel Offering

  • Place your prasad before the deity with both hands. Cover briefly and recite: “Idam Naivedyam Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah.” Then uncover.
  • Offer betel leaf and betel nut — a traditional mark of respect and completion of the ritual service.

4. Mantra Japa

  • “Om Shrim Mahalakshmyai Namah” — chant 108 times for abundance and grace
  • “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” — 108 times for Lord Vishnu’s blessings
  • “Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Maha Lakshmi Namah” — for household prosperity
  • Use a tulsi or crystal mala for counting; sit with a straight spine and soft breath

5. Daan — The Act of Giving

  • Daan on Akshaya Tritiya is considered the most meritorious act of the entire day’s ritual
  • Offer grains, yellow lentils, jaggery, or fruits to someone in need — even before eating yourself
  • Donate to a temple, a school, or an individual facing hardship if possible
  • Place new coins or a small gold item in a yellow cloth at the shrine — keep as the year’s first savings
  • Even offering water to a thirsty person on this day is an act of Akshaya daan

6. Closing the Puja

  • Perform Pradakshina — circle the shrine clockwise three times, or turn yourself in place with gaze fixed on the deity.
  • Do a full Namaskara — bow your head to the ground in gratitude and complete surrender.
  • Recite the Shri Sukta — the 16-verse hymn to Goddess Lakshmi is the most complete traditional closing for this puja.
  • Sit in silence for 5 minutes after closing. Offer your breath, your worries, and your gratitude all at once.
  • Distribute prasad to every member of the household with love and joy.

Mindful Observance

What Not to Do on Akshaya Tritiya

✦   Please Avoid

  • Do not sleep through sunrise — the early morning energy of this day is irreplaceable
  • Avoid tamasic food: meat, alcohol, onion, and garlic on the day of the puja
  • Do not argue, speak harshly, or harbour resentment — the mind’s state today shapes what is planted for the entire year ahead
  • Avoid wasteful spending; buying out of greed rather than gratitude dilutes the day’s spiritual merit
  • Do not leave the puja incomplete once begun — if you must pause, ring the bell once and mentally request the Lord’s patience before stepping away

A Closing Thought

May Abundance Find Your Home

Akshaya Tritiya is not merely a day for ritual — it is a reminder from the cosmos that abundance is the natural state of the universe. The puja you perform at your home shrine is a conversation with that abundance. Offer with joy, give with an open hand, and sit quietly long enough to receive.
